I finished reading A Model World and Other Stories by Michael Chabon about four or so weeks ago.

I will give it 3 out of 5 stars. If you can't tell by the title, it is a collection of short stories, and I won't give a summary of each one, but I suppose what I did to come to that rating was grade each individual story and then average them together. So in other words, some stories are better than a 3 and some worse. "A Model World" is one that stands out, along with "Blumenthal on the Air" and "The Little Knife." Another notable, interesting idea, is that the whole second half of the book is a string of stories all about the same boy and group of characters. Again, some of these stories are better than others, I just think it is a cool idea for a short story collection. Of course Kurt Vonnegut sort of did this already, as I am sure several other authors as well, and it work here also.

Overall, while I do not know when Michael Chabon wrote each of these stories, they seem sort of like student writing, that is to say immature compared to his other work, which makes sense since it was his second book released, but none of them feel like The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, which is why I am assuming he may have written them before that book. If you wanted to skip this collection I think that you could, although it was kind of a fun and fast read.

Right now I am reading If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino, and listening to every Harry Potter book on tape read by Stephen Fry in preparation for a movie marathon leading up to the release of the first part of the 7th movie. I won't talk about the Harry Potter books on here, at best they'd each get a 2 out of 5 stars anyways.

Finished The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson about two or more weeks ago.

I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars. It was pretty good. I read it pretty fast. I found the information to be exciting and I found myself remembering a majority of the facts, so that means it was interesting also. I think the appeal of this book is that it is a collection of facts that no one is really aware of (about the first serial killer in America and the Chicago World's Fair), told in a novel/narrative form, which makes it not seem like you are reading a textbook, which it would otherwise be. But Larson's prose isn't magical or ground breaking, and you have to give him the benefit of the doubt, because in the end he still has to achieve his goal, which is to present facts about forgotten events. That makes a few parts get boring. The best part of the book is the last section, the last 30 pages or so, when the detective is attempting to solve the mysteries that, ahem, aren't really mysteries to the reader.

I suggest giving it a go. I am now reading A Model World and Other Stories by Michael Chabon.

Chronicling the events a few days preceding and then during a camping trip I took with a few friends to Marfa, Texas, home of the Chinati Foundation and the Marfa lights, last weekend. These are all film, no editing, only my camera and eyeball. The second picture is of me, and the ones of the fellow in the middle of the road are of me as well. It was an awesome trip. I love the art and scenery and being able to see the stars at night.

OK! Hey I am back from hiatus. I'll post plenty about what I have been up to, but first this.

I just finished both of these books. And by "just", I mean that, three weeks ago I finished The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon and then a week after that, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh by Chabon.

I don't really know what to say about these books. Both are incredible, easy five out of five stars. I am sure if you google them, you can find much more lofty and credible critical essays on them. I mean Kavalier and Clay won the Pulitzer Prize, I am sure it has been analyzed to death. I just wanted to mention them, in case people care what junk I pump my brain with, which undoubtedly gets diluted and trickles down into certain aspects of my art and life.

I will say this though: several people told me to avoid The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, for a number of reasons (it is Chabon's first novel, it is short, it is boring, etc). I loved it. As much as, if not more than, Kavalier and Clay. It is simply about a man's first post-graduate summer in Pittsburgh. He meets some eccentric friends and does some eccentric things, all the while surprising himself more and more at what he is capable of, pushing his limits all the way until the end. At first I thought this was stupid, because none of the characters are like anything I have encountered in my real life. However, regardless of how crazy and unrealistic, when compared to my life, the characters' antics get, the way they deal with the consequences is very much like how my friends and I would. In fact, several characters' reactions to the results of their outlandish actions, seems to parallel exactly how I am handling and coping with certain decisions in my own life, no matter how different. How the characters handle themselves in the wake of their decisions, feels very, creepily real and personal. I am sure this is the main reason I enjoy the book, because of how close to my own life the descriptions of the characters' emotions are. But still there is more.

Despite all this, all these crazy antics, Chabon still maintains a tone that can best be described as lazy. Not monotonous, or boring. Lazy. The whole books feels like a long lazy Summer, which in some cases is the best kind of Summer, or at least the best part of Summer, especially after many years of schooling. Mostly likely it feels this way, because the narrator/main character isn't living up to his father's expectations, then finds himself not living up to his own, and settling in various aspects of his life. His morals change in surprising ways, he thinks, but it is a safer bet that he had no moral code set in stone in the first place. And just as it may seem that he will hold on to some shred of his perceived former morals, displayed in his interactions with one specific friend, things break and he gives up completely. Which isn't really sad, it is just that the ending feels so odd. And that is the one complaint I have about this novel: the end. The whole last chapter really. It doesn't fit. Things are too hyped up. It seems written differently. It truly feels as if Chabon wrote the whole first 270 pages in one night, then waited a whole year to write the last 20. The action seems to fit, but not the tone. It is annoying to say the least.

Anyways, hope you enjoyed that. Next post will be a ton of photos from recent travels, some of which are already on my flickr, but there is more. That will be followed by a post about Summer City. Which you should know about.

favorite books.

This is for Anonymous, who asked for a suggested reading list, via a comment in a post below.
This was originally just going to be a list. I let it stew inside my head for longer than I meant and thus has spun into a more narrative approach to, not only my favorite books, but also a comprehensive history of my literary consumption.

When I was younger, circa elementary school, I definitely read a lot. Alas, I wasn't the sort of kid interested in tackling bonafide literary landmarks, along the lines of Moby-Dick or anything by Charles Dickens, and so on. No, I stuck to the shallow end of the pool, amidst my peers, devouring mostly the Goosebumps and Animorphs series. In fact, remembering now, those were pretty much the only books I read, outside of the requirements of school, with a few Hardy Boys and Boxcar Children interspersed. About fifth grade is the first time I remember my literary tastes changing, for the better I believe, as we were assigned to read The Giver by Lois Lowry. I loved it, and still regard it as a must read for anybody.

About that time, at the tail of elementary school and on into junior high, mostly sparked by how shocked I'd been that I found The Giver to be enjoyable, I tried to look for more sophisticated books, to see what else was out there, while still avoiding the classics, that were sure to be a bore. But I was lost. So I ended up turning to just other authors, mostly writing young adult novels. I looked towards the likes of Avi (aka Edward Irving Wortis) and Jerry Spinelli, who penned some of my still favorite books: Who Was That Masked Man, Anyway? by Avi and Crash by Jerry Spinelli. Who Was That Masked Man, Anyway? has an amazing ending and is responsible (along with my 5th grade teacher showing me the original Orson Welles The War of the Worlds broadcast) for introducing me to old time radio shows of the 30s and 40s, which I still listen to these days. It was a very important book to me then, and I still consider it (as I have read it recently) to be one of my all time favorite pieces of literature. Another important and wonderful book that I read around this time, and have read recently and still find amazing, is The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. So good.

From there I gravitated towards genre fiction, probably stemming from my interest in the Goosebump books, mostly of the horror or mystery type. I stepped up from R.L. Stine's Goosebump series, to his more lengthy and juicy novels in the series called Fear Street. I also read a lot of Joan Lowery Nixon and Lois Duncan. I particularly remember a controversy in my house revolving around a Duncan book I asked for and received for Christmas, in which students in the book murder their teacher. No doubt my mom thought I should not have been reading such morbid material at such a young age, (and I find it odd that Duncan's books are considered young adult fiction) but I still recall being able to get away with it in the end. After awhile I started picking up Piers Anthony's Xanth series, a sort of parody fantasy series, where everything set in a fictional world is based around puns. I still read a lot of these to this day, call it a guilty pleasure, but I still find them funny. The series is really long, with no end in site, so who knows if I'll read them all.

So when high school rolled around, I was pretty much just gorging myself on a diet of horror, mystery, and fantasy stories. The books assigned in class were barely enough to hold my attention, much less, convince me that more intriguing literature existed. I mean come on, A Separate Peace? Really? How is that book supposed to make me care about literature? But — the winds shifted sophomore year, when we were allowed to choose our own books to write the hallowed reports about. I naturally put very little thought into this, and only chose Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut at the insistence of my teacher and the fact that it had the word "slaughter" in the title. Must be a mystery for sure, based on my genre fiction knowledge. Yeah, right. All my preconceived notions were shattered. Literature, good literature, finally had a prophet on its behalf, sitting right there in my hands. It was beautiful. The way Vonnegut constructed that narrative, how farfetched one part of it seemed, yet how real the other, just blew my lid sky high at that age. Was this guy just writing about aliens that see in four dimensions? Wait, but wasn't he also just describing World War II? The way Vonnegut handles notions of death, love, and religion in that book, and in every book really, in such a dry, satirical way, resonated with me so much at that age, with my whole sixteen years of life experience, that I began to nod my head on every page and think, "Yeah, everyone should approach life this way." Needless to say, the game had changed.

R.L. Stine and his cohorts were left in the dust. I picked up more Vonnegut. I started to enjoy every book we read in class, because my whole approach to reading critically, and how effective and valuable the written word could be had changed. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, were among our assigned reading, and notably the most enjoyable. Beyond these and others, like I mentioned, I dropped the "young adult" and mystery and horror like a hot rock, and picked up books like Yann Martel's Life of Pi, in my spare time. Life flew by. The books flew by. By the end of high school, Kurt Vonnegut, for obvious reasons (ahem, changed my life), was my favorite author, Tim O'Brien my second favorite, and I considered myself a literary enthusiast, and knowledgable too, as proved by my senior thesis which was an essay and presentation concerning the themes of existentialism and disillusionment as discussed in the play No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre and the novel The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut.

Nowadays, though, I do not consider myself so knowledgable. There is a ton out there that I haven't read, or even know about. Kurt Vonnegut is still my favorite author though. Sophomore year of college I read every single (14 of them) fiction novel, all three short story collections, and a play, by him, in order of publication. There are some pretty interesting consistencies if you approach his books that way. So I highly, highly suggest doing that. But, if that is too much for you, here are my top five favorite Vonnegut Books (1-most favorite, 5-least):
5. Mother Night
4. Slaughterhouse-Five
3. Breakfast of Champions
2. Timequake
1. Hocus Pocus

It was really hard for me to choose those five, all of his books are amazing. I do know for sure that Hocus Pocus is my favorite though. At the very least, if you don't want to take on the daunting task of reading every Kurt Vonnegut novel, which I am sure that reading just one of the above listed will nearly convince you of, at least read some of his short stories, which he made a living off of writing for many years before he ever published a novel. So you know they are amazing. Those are collected in the books:

I mentioned that Tim O'Brien was my second favorite author. Now, due to my recent readings, I am not so sure he still holds that position, but he is up there. I would easily put him a rung below Vonnegut, which will continue to be the standard to which I hold all authors, not only for the rest of this post, but perhaps my life. I've only read five of O'Brien's eight books, and they were all amazing, but I'll try to put them in order for you:

So what are some of these recent readings, that have outshone Tim O'Brien in the running for my next favorite author after Vonnegut? Well, first of all there is Woody Allen. Now, I am certain his writing isn't better than Tim O'Brien, but it is still amazing and hilarious. You may be aware of his films, but I suggest you immediately get acquainted with his prose. The two collections of his short stories, out of his published four, that I have read are Side Effects and Without Feathers. I highly recommend both, and I am sure as soon as I get my hands on the other two, I will be recommending those as well.

Next, we have Dave Eggers. Now, he is definitely in the running to replace O'Brien on my list. I just want to read more of his work before I make my final decision. I have only read two of his books. I read his memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, first, urged by one of my close friends. This book is amazing, but pales in comparison to any O'Brien or Vonnegut book. I still definitely recommend it, but the next book I read by Eggers, You Shall Know Our Velocity, turned his memoir to dust in my mind. It is easily as good as any Vonnegut book. Go. Read. It. Now. It is his first fiction novel, and the second book he wrote (after his memoir), and there is plenty more of his books to go, which I plan to continue reading in order. I am sure they are all great, so if you can't find the two I mentioned, I suggest grabbing whatever you can by him.

The most recent author I have read, and am reading, picking up a book by him I had on my shelf for some time, immediately after You Shall Know Our Velocity, is Michael Chabon. His book The Yiddish Policemen's Union, is the best book I have read since finishing Hocus Pocus (my favorite Kurt Vonnegut book). It is incredible. I could write another post this length on it merits alone. I wrote down what felt like to be half of the book's lines, in a notebook to remember. I have this thing where I like to keep a notebook by my side when I find myself reading a book that I enjoy, and scribble down any line of text I find intriguing and well written. I was doing this practically every paragraph with this book, and still managed to finish it extremely fast. If you have read this whole post (which would be amazingly diligent of you), and find my writing insanely boring and annoying and no help at all, I guarantee you will get out of it one reward at least, if you go buy yourself this book, and then read it. Read it.

After I read that book, as you can see below, I flipped back to Tim O'Brien, because I found some of his books at a used bookstore, and knew I had some time to read them pretty fast. Now I am back to Chabon and am currently involved with his Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, which so far is great.

And yes, there are other books and short lived love affairs with certain authors and genres that I left out, like my tryst with science fiction, and the other classics I sought out in high school (ahem, A Wrinkle in Time, etc. See Madeleine L'Engle) because I have difficulty remembering the books or authors I read, mostly because I don't have the books anymore, or had checked them out of the library, and thus, never owned them.

P.S. Thank you Anonymous, for bringing to my attention an immense blunder on my behalf: I completely left out an awesome book and author. Before I even read all the Vonnegut books in order, freshman year of college I tore through Youth in Revolt by C.D. Payne. Do you want to laugh? Really laugh? And not just from dark humor or sardonic comments towards society, but also legitimately funny situations and incredible prose? Then read this book. Maybe you saw the movie or something, I don't care, don't judge it from that, go read it. Or really any book you can find from him. They are rather hard to come by, but the only other one of his I have read is Frisco Pigeon Mambo, which is also hilarious.

This turned into a novel. I apologize. I can only hope you found some of this information useful.

Just finished:

I give it 3 out of 5 stars. It is amazingly well written, a great story, just way too short. I have only read one other Michael Chabon book, and it is amazingly long, and amazingly awesome, so in comparison this one felt rushed. It is such a wonderful premise for a story, I believe it has the legs to be a full length novel, alas Chabon wraps the mystery up in just 131 pages. I just don't think Chabon stretched his literary muscles to their full extent, and thus left me wanting more. Ok, I'll just go read one of his other books. Problem solved.

Just finished:

Probably my least favorite Tim O'Brien book. But that isn't to say it is a bad book. Heck, I finished it in, what, 5 days. No, I'd say it is a pretty amazing book, just not his best. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars, and based on a a scale of books I have read recently, rate it slightly below A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers, .

Yes, definitely a must read.

Just finished:

I'll give it a 4 out of 5 stars. Ranks up there with the best of Tim O'Brien, and he is my second favorite author, after Kurt Vonnegut. Based on a scale of books I have read rather recently, I'd place it just better than A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers.

"There is merely what happened and what is now happening and what will one day happen."

Pretty intense stuff, though.
